PAPAYA Tattoo Vibrator Review
Happy Day After Christmas, Dear Readers!
In June 2011, I reviewed the new PAPAYA Toys Candy Stick Vibrator. You can see I found very few flaws in this vibrator and considering I liked it quite a lot, I figured it might be fun to review another of PAPAYA Toys’ vibrators. This time it’s the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator from FunWares.
Just like the Candy Stick, the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator was a bit of a surprise when I opened the box. Having had the same experience with the Candy Stick, I was somewhat prepared. Even so, I was still struck with how big the Tattoo appears. Holding it in my hand certainly does not diminish the size of this bright green vibrator. At 9″ long, with 5.5″ being insertable, the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator is quite a handful. It’s not that 5.5″ of insertable length is so unusual, it’s more the 9″ in length and the 1.75″ in girth (at its widest point) that makes the Tattoo feel so large in my hand. It may also be the color that makes it stand out. However, just because this vibrator seems huge in the hand does mean it is anything of which to be frightened.
Like their other sex toys, the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator is made of 100% medical grade silicone. Although the Tattoo is manufactured in Asia, the silicone comes from U.S. suppliers so you can be sure it is of the highest quality. This silicone has a very slight scent but I have to practically stick the vibrator up my nose to smell it. It has no discernible taste, not that your mouth is the preferred place you want to stick this toy. Of course, the reason for the name “Tattoo” is the tattoo designs on both sides of the shaft, which add a nice detail.
This particular silicone has a lovely soft feel to it. However, it does have quite a bit of drag so I recommend using a water-based lubricant with it. You want to avoid silicone-based lubes as they can have a negative chemical reaction with the silicone of the vibrator, damaging it and causing it to become tacky. Aside from the softness of this silicone, it does not pick up much lint or dust. Of course, you still want to wash the Tattoo before and after use. I’m just pointing out that it isn’t a lint magnet like many silicone toys.
As the Tattoo Vibrator is waterproof, cleaning is easy. PAPAYA Toys recommends washing it with warm water and soap, though you can also use a sex toy cleaner or a 10% bleach solution. As an aside, the Tattoo does not have any sort of flared base so it isn’t appropriate for anal use.
I know I’m always going on and on about how I prefer rechargeable vibrators, and I do. However, it is nice to have a few vibrators around that take batteries because they are ready to go in a jiff while you’re waiting for your rechargeables to charge up. The PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator requires two AA batteries, which are not included, so you’d best have some on hand. The bottom third of the shaft, right below the purple plastic band, unscrews to allow access to the battery compartment. When you unscrew it you can feel how solidly the vibrator is put together, and the large o-ring gives me confidence that the Tattoo is truly waterproof.
Inside the battery compartment is a rather unique battery cartridge. It is great for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, you never want to store your vibrators with batteries inside of them. When you are done using the Tattoo, remove the batteries, after washing it and before putting it away. This will lengthen the life of your batteries and vibrator. It is quick and easy to remove the battery pack with the batteries in it and store them like that. This allows you to simply pop the cartridge in when you are ready to use the Tattoo, no fumbling around trying to get the batteries into the vibrator.
The other very cool thing about this battery cartridge is that it is reversible. It doesn’t matter which way you put it in, it will work. This may sound like no big deal but if you’ve ever spent an annoying amount of time trying to get a battery pack into a vibrator the proper way, you know this is super cool. It is so cool, in fact, that PAPAYA Toys won the Outstanding Innovation Award for its Reversible Battery Pack at the 2011 O Awards at the AVN Adult Novelty Expo.
Enough about battery packs, let’s get to the vibrations. In short, I like them. They are deep and rumbly and strong. They get me off quickly and will be satisfying for many women. The vibrations are concentrated in the head of the vibrator so I really feel them on my clit when I am using the Tattoo externally. Like the Candy Stick, I find the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator to be on the noisy side. I can hear it through the door of my bedroom if everything is quiet. Music or TV will easily mask the sound but if you need a silent toy, this is not the vibrator for you.
Once you get the hang of it, the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator is easy to use. It works a little differently than most of my vibrators so it takes some getting used to. The Tattoo has a large button on its base that acts as the control panel. In use, the right side of the button turns the vibrator on, increases the intensity of the vibrations, and switches between modes. The left side of the button decreases the intensity and turns the vibrator off. What’s different about this system is that rather than clicking the right side of the button briefly to increase the intensity, you press and hold until you reach the desired level. A brief push of the button cycles you to the next mode. It is the same with the left side of the button. Press and hold to decrease the intensity level and give a brief click to turn the Tattoo off. There is nothing wrong with this design, I am just accustomed to pressing and holding to turn the vibrator off and giving a brief push to change the intensity. In addition, the PAPAYA Tattoo Vibrator has a memory chip so it remembers where it was when you turned it off and starts up on the same mode and intensity level.
The PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator has three vibration modes. They are as follows:
1. Steady vibration
2. Medium pulse
3. 1 medium pulse and 4 fast pulses
I really enjoy using the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator. I like the vibrations, and while I prefer a quiet toy, it isn’t an absolute necessity for me. The shape works well, and though I do not feel the lovely tattoo design on the sides of the shaft when it is inside me, I do feel the pop of the head as I thrust in and out. I normally like patterns but these patterns don’t do much for me so I tend to prefer the steady vibration mode of the Tattoo. As the silicone is layered over a hard inner core that contains the motor, clenching down on the shaft feels pretty great.
The packaging of the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator is simple yet pretty and useful. There is an outer sleeve around the box with an image of the Tattoo. I would like them to do away with this to save on paper but I understand they use it to identify the specific vibrator as the box underneath is generic. The box itself is large compared to the size of the Tattoo but it is very strong and sturdy. It closes via a magnetic flap on the side. Inside the box, the Tattoo sits in a molded plastic tray with its black satin storage bag. As you all know, I love a good storage bag. Hell, I’ll even take a not so great storage bag over none at all.
Also included in the box is a pamphlet in English, German, French, and Spanish. This pamphlet provides basic information about the vibrator and the company. Normally I would complain about such a large box but I love that it is discreet, without any images of the Tattoo on it (unlike the outer sleeve) or the word vibrator plastered all over the place. The text on the back of the box is in German, so unless you’ve got a best friend who happens to be from Germany like I do, you should be pretty safe. I also think that once you remove the plastic tray the box is great for storage. You can fit a couple of vibrators (tucked into individual storage bags so they don’t touch) in the box, a bunch of condoms and little bottles of lube, or multiple toy chargers. It has tons of uses.
PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator Pros:
• Rumbly vibrations
• Strong vibrations
• Good shape
• Nice size
• Memory chip
• Waterproof
• Not a lint magnet
PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator Cons:
• Noisy
Like its cousin the Candy Stick, the PAPAYA Toys Tattoo Vibrator is pretty nice. The size and shape suit me very well, as do the vibrations. I really like the softness of the silicone and the fact that it is easy to keep clean. I think all sex toys should be waterproof, just for ease of cleaning if nothing else, so I very much appreciate this about the Tattoo. A memory chip is by no means a necessity but it can be nice when you have to turn off the vibrator in a hurry because someone is knocking on your door or you get a phone call you must answer. It’s convenient to be able to turn the Tattoo back on and start up right where you left off. The design is attractive and I love the fun color. The fact that it comes with a storage bag and a discreet box is a bonus. For a non-rechargeable vibrator, the Tattoo does a good job.
